Urban Legends

I’ve been fascinated with Urban Legends for years, especially the creepy ones, and sometimes I’ll spend hours reading about them, even if some of the stories are ones I’ve read before

An urban legend, urban myth, urban tale, or contemporary legend is a form of modern folklore. It usually consists of fictional stories, often presented as true, with macabre or humorous elements, rooted in local popular culture. These legends can be used for entertainment purposes, as well as semi-serious explanations for random events such as disappearances and strange objects.

Urban legends are spread by any media, including newspapers, e-mail and social media. In America in 1938 a radio dramatization of The War of the Worlds supposedly caused mass panic, though the program had a relatively small audience.

Some urban legends have passed through the years with only minor changes to suit regional variations. More recent legends tend to reflect modern circumstances, like the story of people ambushed and anesthetized, who awaken minus one kidney, which was supposedly surgically removed for transplantation

The term “urban legend,” as used by folklorists, has appeared in print since at least 1968. Jan Harold Brunvand, professor of English at the University of Utah, introduced the term to the general public in a series of popular books published beginning in 1981. Brunvand used his collection of legends, The Vanishing Hitchhiker: American Urban Legends & Their Meanings (1981) to make two points: first, that legends and folklore do not occur exclusively in so-called primitive or traditional societies, and second, that one could learn much about urban and modern culture by studying such tales.

Many urban legends are framed as complete stories with plot and characters. The compelling appeal of a typical urban legend is its elements of mystery, horror, fear or humor. Often they serve as cautionary tales. Some urban legends are morality tales that depict someone, usually a child, acting in a disagreeable manner, only to wind up in trouble, hurt, or dead – such as the boy who cried wolf.

Some of my favourites include The Black Dog, Bloody Mary, Chupacabra, Hookman, Killer in the Backseat, The Licked Hand, and the Vanishing Hitchhiker.

Top 5 Music Artists

I love my alternative rock, especially 90s alt rock and this has been really hard to narrow down to just 5. I think right now my answers would be:

Day 3) 5 Favorite Music Artists

1) Foo Fighters
Now this never changes. The Foo Fighters have been my favourite band for as long as I can remember and I can’t see this changing any time soon. I just plain adore them. And my favourite song of theirs would probably be Times Like These – hence the title of my journal

2) Green Day
The best live concert I ever want to was Green Day at the Milton Keynes Bowl way back in 2005. They were incredible, they absolutely blew me away. I’ve been a fan since the first time I heard Basket Case as a teenager and its still one of my favourite songs

3) Fall Out Boy
Honestly, I was kind of determined not to like FOB. Sugar We’re Going Down was so overplayed and I got so fed up of it that I was just not interested. But they kind of crept under my defences and somehow they’re now one of my favourites. How does that work? Favourite song is probably My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark

4) blink-182
It was love at first listen to All The Small Things. I went straight out and bought Enema Of The State and proceeded to fall even more in love. I’ve not heard any of their more recent work and I’m not a huge fan of their early stuff but like Enema, Take Off Your Pants & Jacket and Blink-182 are my jam.

5) My Chemical Romance
Another band I didn’t expect to like but their music grabbed me when watching Kerrang one day. Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge is one of my most played CDs ever – like, I had to replace it because I killed it, level of overplayed. You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison is easily my favourite track of theirs

I think a special mention needs to be given to Linkin Park. RIP Chester ♥

Right now I am listening to System Of A Down – Chop Suey!

Top 5 Actors

Now that it’s time to actually post these, lets see if I can remember them!

Day 2) 5 Favorite Actors

1) Chris Evans
Ah my Captain, my Steve Rogers. I adore Chris Evans in this role and he’s the reason I started watching the Avengers movies. I also love him in The Losers and I first saw him in Not Another Teen Movie

2) David Tennant
My favourite Doctor and I would run away with him in a heartbeat if he asked. I love him in Harry Potter and Jessica Jones as well. Doesn’t he play slightly insane so very well? And as for Hamlet ❤

3) Michael Shanks
I'm not ashamed of my love for Daniel Jackson. I probably should be, but I'm not. I've also really enjoyed watching Michael in Saving Hope and I'm slowly making my way through some of his more… questionable… movies

4) Ewan McGregor
You know those actors you will watch anything they're in and just the mere mention of his name sends you all a quiver? Ewan is that guy for me. I've watched animated movies he's done voice work for, I've watched movies about topics that make me uncomfortable. I went down to London to see him on stage. I heartseyes him

5) Jason Momoa

Do I really need to say any more? haha

Top 5 Actresses

For some reason, I got the first two days muddled up in my head and thought day one was top 5 actors so started planning out the post in my head, only to open up the post an entry and the file with the list in it to discover

Day 1) 5 Favorite Actresses

1) Scarlett Johansson.
I will watch pretty much anything with Scarlett in it. I think she is a very talented actress with great range. She’s also a stunning looking woman. I first saw her in Ghost World, way back in 2001 but it was Lost In Translation that made me sit up and really pay attention to her. I think my favourite role of hers is Black Widow though

2) Carrie Fisher
Princess Leia has been my role model for as long as I can remember. The first time we see this young woman and she’s standing up to an evil dictator who is psychological torturing her and holding her prisoner and she is not cowering but standing her own. And she does more of the rescuing herself than Luke and Han!
As I grew up, I learned more about her as a person, about her struggles with addiction and mental health and how strong and candid a woman she was. She did so much for Hollywood that so few people really know about. The world surely lost an icon, a force if you pardon the pun, when she passed.

3) Amanda Tapping
Who doesn’t love Sam Carter and Helen Magnus? You just have to look at all the different AU versions of Sam, all the different ways Amanda can/has played the same character to realise she’s a bloody talented woman. And not just in front of the camera – she’s become a seriously sought after genre director which as a woman, even in 2017, is a hell of an achievement. Plus she comes over as so goofy and caring.

4) Emma Watson
I remember thinking when the first Harry Potter film promo pictures came out that Emma was going to grow up to be a heart-breaker and how right was I? She’s smart and thoughtful and stylish and I’ve felt sort of privileged to watch her grow into the amazing woman she’s becoming. I really look forward to seeing what’s next for her and where’s she’s going to go both as an actress and a… can I call a girl a statement?

5) Helena Bonham Carter
I first saw Helena in, I think, Big Fish and I love how she has this wonderful ‘kooky’ surreal edge to her. She really shines in the slightly out-there roles like Bellatrix or Mrs Lovett. I love her work with Tim Burton but i also thinks she’s amazing in traditional roles like Miss Havisham or Ophelia. Very talented lady

A Few Of My Favourite Things

I found one of those 30 day memes on Pinterest that really caught my eye – it’s all about Top 5 favourites and includes topics such as actors, actresses, movies, books, models, animals, fears… I think it looks quite interesting and I’m really looking forward to starting it. I sort of want to start it today because it feels like new things should start on a Monday, but the month starts tomorrow. So tomorrow I’ll start it.

Right now I am –
reading: JK Rowling – Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows
watching: Nothing, but I’m poking at Netflix to see if anything catches my attention. I’m thinking of catching up on Saving Hope (which is downloading because I’m a naughty girl!) and finishing Forever. Although I’m quite tired so I do’t know if I’ll stay awake to watch 3 episodes tonight. At least I’ll have good dreams if I fall asleep in any of those!
listening to: An 80s rock playlist on Spotify
eating: I’ve just ordered a pizza because I’m feeling tired and lazy
